Choosing the Best Epoxy for Countertops: Why Superclear Countertop Epoxy is Your Top Pick

When it comes to kitchen renovations, one of the most transformative changes you can make is upgrading your countertops. And if you’re considering epoxy for countertops, you’ve probably realized there’s a lot to choose from. Picking the right epoxy is a critical step toward your new beautiful kitchen or bath! Trust is what we constantly work to cultivate here at Superclear, and we back that with a high-quality product and exceptional customer service and tech support. Let’s dive into some reasons why Superclear Countertop Epoxy should be your go-to choice.

Dispelling Some Industry Claims

There are a ton of other “brands” out there that will flippantly make unfounded claims just to sell you their product. Be careful, and make sure to do your homework.

500°F Heat Resistance

First off, under our parent company FGCI, we’ve been in the resin, polymer and composite industry since the late 1950’s. We know what polymers can, and most importantly, cannot do. Our products have been used in construction, marine manufacturing (yachts, pleasure boats, performance boats, Coast Guard vessels, etc.), corrosion and some aeronautical industry. We understand limitations.

When you hear that a product is “up to 500°F heat resistant” that is technically considered a fire-retardant resin. Fire-retardant resins are extremely expensive, and when sold to the public, a quality fire-retardant epoxy typically starts around $150–$200/gallon. These epoxies are also NEVER CLEAR as they are always compounded with fire-retardant fillers, which is what makes them fire retardant.

Don’t be fooled by parlor tricks on videos where a hot pot is taken off the stove and placed on the epoxy. It’s very easy to control the heat and/or creative cutting of videos to make you think that it has a higher heat resistance than it does. Then when you do it on your counters and have a problem, you’ll get blamed for incorrect mix ratio or a number of other things YOU did wrong. Don’t be fooled, and if you’re unsure, just give us a call and we can go over more particulars!

In all honesty, pans very rarely reach that temp. See the ranges below for gas burners and stovetops:

  • Low: 100–120°F
  • Medium: 140–160°F
  • High: 180–200°F
  • High heat: 425–450°F, or even 500°F for wok cooking

About 1:1 Table Top Epoxy

Some of those very same “brands” we just mentioned will also try and sell you a 1:1 table top epoxy. These are generally great for table, bar and even furniture coatings. You can also use them for arts and crafts and other decorative coating applications when paired with colorants. However, they are meant as a protective coating for what they are applied to. That said, they are softer and therefore more flexible, helping to protect against bumping, jolting or banging.

They are not hard enough to be a countertop coating, and they have a much lower heat resistance, typically between 120°F and 135°F, depending on the epoxy formulation. Even though our Superclear Table Top is 80–81 Shore D strength, it still isn’t strong enough to be appropriate for a counter application, and given most competitors’ products range between 72–78 Shore D, you definitely will regret using it and not a dedicated countertop epoxy. So don’t try to skimp—you’ll always regret it later!

Why Epoxy for Countertops?

Epoxy countertops have surged in popularity, and it’s not hard to see why. They offer a unique combination of durability, aesthetics, and customization that other materials simply can’t match. But what makes epoxy such a great choice?

Benefits of Using Epoxy for Countertops

  • Affordability: Let’s face it, new marble, stone or even quartz is far more expensive.
  • Durability: Epoxy is incredibly tough. It can withstand the daily wear and tear of a busy kitchen.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The glossy, glass-like finish is stunning and can mimic the look of more expensive materials like granite or marble.
  • Customization: Create unique designs and color combinations that reflect your personal style.
  • Seamless Finish: Unlike tile or laminate, epoxy creates a smooth, seamless surface that’s easy to clean.

Key Considerations When Choosing Epoxy

Affordability

The current costs of marble, stone or quartz can be outrageous. Quartz used to be the cheapest, but now averages about $53 per square foot. Surprisingly, granite is cheaper, now averaging about $40. On the other hand, you can achieve the same look, or even better, for at most a little less than $6 per square foot. Yes—that’s right. Superclear Countertop Epoxy is only $5.83 per square foot (at 8 ounces per square foot)!

Durability and Strength

Your kitchen countertops take a lot of abuse. You need an epoxy that can handle heat, spills, and scratches without breaking a sweat. Superclear Countertop Epoxy is known for its exceptional durability and appropriate heat resistance (up to 205°F), making it an ideal choice for high-traffic kitchens.
