When sanding epoxy resin, it’s important to follow a multistep process for the best results. Start with a coarse 80-120 grit sandpaper or orbital sander to flatten and level the surface. Once smoothed out, switch to a 240-320 grit to get finer scratches.
You can then either stop at this step for a satin look, or refine further through the grits from 400-1000 in tandem with a buffing/polishing compound for a high gloss finish.
Take care to sand evenly and check for low spots by sighting the surface from multiple angles. Also be mindful of heat buildup which can melt the epoxy – avoid oversanding or bearing down too hard in one area.
Most importantly, take precautions against breathing dust by wearing an N95 mask and work in a well ventilated area. The proper tools, technique and safety equipment will produce a beautiful sanded epoxy finish.
